L'ARBRE aux pieds nus - Didier Mahieu
Rond-Point - Chaussée Roi Baudouin - 7030 Saint-Symphorien
‘Two young men, soldiers in spite of themselves, with their backs to a living tree. The colour of the stone is reminiscent of the graves in the nearby military cemetery. One English, the other German. Barefoot, unarmed, staring into the distance.
A place of remembrance of the Great War, the Saint-Symphorien military cemetery was recognised as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2023. Proud of its heritage and its history, the City of Mons and the Mons Memorial Museum wanted to highlight the memory of these two belligerent nations of the First World War. An emblematic site, it was also in this cemetery that the first ceremony marking the centenary of the Empire's entry into the war took place on 4 August, in the presence of the Belgian and British royal families. Owned by the Houzeau de Lehaie family and managed by the CWGC, it is one of the finest memorial sites in Europe.
