De site van het Belfort

L'attraction touristique phare de Mons qu'il faudrait faire monter à tout prix si de passage dans la cité. Le beffroi est exceptionnel en ce sens qu'il est l'un des plus hauts du pays, en plus d'être plutôt bien conservé pour son âge. La vue panoramique offerte ne couvre pas l'ensemble de la ville certes mais donne quand même à voir une vision des bâtiments historiques proches, ce qui reste appréciable. Au niveau pratique, le lieu est très accessible à partir du centre-ville. Vous aurez un peu de marche à effectuer en montée mais sans plus, cela ne monte pas si haut. De plus, si vous ne comptez pas spécialement monter les dernières marches du beffroi à pieds, un ascenseur est mis à disposition et permet d'atteindre même le mécanisme interne de l'horloge. Tout cela en étant documenté pour chaque étage du monument. Dernier point qui a son importance : l'espace environnant est aussi fort agréable et esthétique puisqu'il consiste en un jardin aménagé avec vue en hauteur, ce qui présente un beau cadre pour prévoir des réunions en ville.

Prachtige stad met mooie omgeving, zoals het parkje bij het belfort. Alles is mooi aangelegd. Een bezoek is zeker de moeite.

Naar boven betekent niet helemaal naar boven. En in de toren hebben ze mooie weetjes zoals: waarom staat hier een klokkentoren? Omdat de vorige is afgebrand.

Obviously tickets couldn't be bought from the Belfry itself so we had to walk a little way and buy the ticket, written out by hand, from the UNESCO house and then walk up the winding path to the castle park and enter that way. Once inside you take the lift to the fifth floor and then climb a further three floors on a metal staircase to see the clock operating mechanism. And that's it, no balcony to see the views. Climbing down one floor you can look through windows to see a panorama of the city but they were so filthy it spoiled the experience. I walked a circuit of the small castle park and then we walked back through the town.
