In the heart of the city, the Doudou Museum invites you to discover the city’s most famous celebration, the “Ducasse de Mons”, which was recognised by UNESCO in 2005. Using innovative technology, the Museum aims at understanding and valorising the various aspects of this universal, plurisecular legend. The various exhibition spaces are structured around a common thread: St-George & the dragon, somewhere between fantasy and reality.

This isn't a museum in the conventional sense, it's really a celebration of the annual festival La Ducasse that is hugely important in the life of Mons (my photo shows a window display in a nearby shop, but you can buy a range of souvenirs in the museum shop). There are not many physical artefacts, the videos are the main exhibits. I really enjoyed my visit but I think this was mainly because I visited Mons for La Ducasse back in 2012 (before this museum existed) and the videos brought back a lot of memories. The exhibits give a good sense of what happens in the festival, which is a genuinely spectacular event. If you can't manage to visit Mons on Trinity Sunday for the real thing then the museum will give you some idea of what you are missing. The information panels are really good, and English is used throughout alongside Dutch and French. The staff are really helpful, even taking me to find the toilets that were in an entirely separate museum. If you struggle with stairs be warned, the lift only operates between the top floor and the ground floor.
