Guided tour: Belfry

About the activity

The Belfry of Mons, recognized by UNESCO since 1999, is an iconic landmark of the landscape of Mons. Only baroque belfry in Belgium, it reopened to the public in 2015 after more than 30 years of restoration. An interpretation center dedicated to its history and UNESCO World Heritage recognition allows visitors to better understand the unique story of this exceptional building. A panoramic lift facilitates access for the public and enables people with reduced mobility to explore almost the entire site. The permanent exhibition comes to life with innovative multimedia installations, some objects from the collections of Mons, panels, and more. From the heights of Mons, the visit also offers an unmissable panoramic view of the city.

I enjoyed to see the town from the top of this magnificient old tower
Naar boven betekent niet helemaal naar boven. En in de toren hebben ze mooie weetjes zoals: waarom staat hier een klokkentoren? Omdat de vorige is afgebrand.
Obviously tickets couldn't be bought from the Belfry itself so we had to walk a little way and buy the ticket, written out by hand, from the UNESCO house and then walk up the winding path to the castle park and enter that way. Once inside you take the lift to the fifth floor and then climb a further three floors on a metal staircase to see the clock operating mechanism. And that's it, no balcony to see the views. Climbing down one floor you can look through windows to see a panorama of the city but they were so filthy it spoiled the experience. I walked a circuit of the small castle park and then we walked back through the town.
I recommend it with the Museum Pass, it's short but nice
En habitant la région on oublie parfois qu il y de belle choses à voir à côté de chez soit, belle visite
