default textUtopix - Geoffrey

Embark on a journey through time and let yourself be guided by the twists and turns of the Trouille: the hidden river of Mons reveals its secrets to you!

About

FR

There was a time when the Trouille flowed through the city. Now diverted from its original course and partly covered, the Trouille bypasses the city of Mons. However, it is possible to walk along the urban path of yesteryear. Aside from the architectural testimonies of different eras, aside from the evocative street names, this walk also leads us to discover unsuspected green spaces.

Lucy and the Butterflies’ (or La petite fille aux papillons) by French artist David Mesguich is a poetic and monumental sculpture that captivates with its interplay of innocence and strength. Inspired by the saying “butterflies in the stomach” and a childhood painting of a heart threatened by scissors, Mesguich reimagined his daughter Lucie surrounded by butterflies — breaking the scissors to symbolize protection, resistance, and hope . The resulting work—comprising over 2000 triangular steel facets standing about 7 m tall—beautifully transforms a busy urban square into a space for reflection. While striking, its grand scale can at times feel a little out of place in the historical setting of Roosevelt Square. But overall, it’s a powerful and thoughtful addition to Mons — a symbol of both fragility and resilience.
