A Visit to the Mines: An Unforgettable Experience

Extend your discovery tour with a descent into a Neolithic mine shaft, up to 10 metres deep, accompanied by a guide.

Guided tour times with descent:

Every Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday at 2:00 PM

During school holidays: Thursday to Sunday at 2:00 PM

Price: €8 + surface site admission

Reservation required (max. 12 people)

For ages 10 and up

Wear suitable clothing and sturdy shoes

An Outdoor Exhibition on Archaeology

Discover the latest archaeological finds from the site, including human remains, fossilized pollen, and flint artifacts, through an engaging photo exhibition curated by AWAP.


Fun Discovery Booklets for Kids

Make the visit even more engaging for young visitors with special activity booklets designed for ages 4-6 and 7-11, available for free at the reception.


Nature Walks Around SILEX’S

Explore the prehistoric landscapes surrounding the site with four family-friendly walking trails. Free maps available at the reception and on www.silexs.mons.be.

Het ligt op een mooie plek en de informatie ruimte is overzichtelijk en we kregen volop informatie van de begeleider. We gingen in de vuursteengrot, er werden voorzorgsmaatregelen genomen. Maar er was beneden ruimte, we hadden verwacht een wandeling door de grotten te krijgen.

They do not sell tickets to the mine but to the small museum. Very dishonest.

The site is peculiar to better understand the development of flint cutters in Palaeolithic Europe. A real added value is the visit of the museum with a local guide, including the descend into one of the mines with proper safety equipment. Our guide was very acknowledgeable and she made the tour very pleasant. Make sure to book in advance if you wish to descend into the mine, as the excursion takes place once or twice a day only.

Where is the Carrefour we shopped at when we lived in spienne? Whatever. Sweden is on time; waaaaay early for most and at the earliest they can be for military. And thank you.

Les mines de silex néolithiques de Spiennes sont un site archéologique impressionnant et très bien mis en valeur. Le musée sur place offre une bonne introduction historique, avec des explications claires, des reconstitutions et des objets trouvés dans les mines. Les guides sont passionnés et très compétents, ce qui rend la visite à la fois instructive et captivante. Le parcours dans les mines est bien pensé : on peut explorer des galeries, voir des puits anciens et apprécier l’ampleur du travail des premiers mineurs. C’est une expérience immersive, surtout quand on imagine la vie néolithique et les techniques rudimentaires utilisées pour extraire le silex. Le site est bien sécurisé et bien entretenu, ce qui permet de se promener avec confiance tout en ressentant le poids de l’histoire. Le seul petit bémol : il peut y avoir des périodes de forte affluence, surtout en été, ce qui peut rendre certaines parties plus bondées et diminuer un peu l’intimité du lieu. De plus, certaines explications dans le musée pourraient être plus interactives pour les enfants plus jeunes.
