Mons Town Hall

Mons Town Hall was built in the Gothic style between 1458 and 1477. It has only one upper floor and is capped with a bell-tower added in 1717-1718.

The interior is worth a visit: The Wedding Hall (Salle des Mariages) with its Italian ceiling (1682), the Council Chamber (Salle des Commissions) with its fireplace made of marble from Rance, and the Sacquiaux Room (Salle des Sacquiaux) with its impressive 16th-century fireplace. The Portrait Room (Salon des Portraits) and the Grand Rooms (Grands Salons) are also exceptional and decorated in period style. In the other wing, the Mayour’s Parlour (Cabinet d'Apparat) is one of the oldest parts of the building, dating back to the 15th century, but its current furnishings only go back to the late 19th century.

At the back, the Mayor's Garden (Jardin du Mayeur), laid out between 1930 and 1936, is a peaceful green oasis in the heart of the city. Here, you'll see the statue of the "Ropieur" and, as you exit the site through the Grand-Place, you won't miss the artwork by Gérard Garouste (2006), as well as the small monkey of Mons, which brings good luck for the year, provided you stroke its head with your left hand.

Good to know: The local dialect word sacquiaux means “small leather bags”. The Sacquiaux Room in the Town Hall was originally the guardhouse and the keys of the city were stored there for safekeeping.
