Ducasse of Messines in Mons – An unmissable local tradition

The Ducasse of Messines, held in the charming district of Mons, is much more than just a festive event: it is an annual gathering filled with tradition, conviviality, and entertainment. This popular festival, deeply rooted in the history of Mons, attracts locals and visitors every year to celebrate in a warm and authentic atmosphere.

About the activity

The folkloric Ducasse of Messines is an ode to spring and features a grand flower market, a testament to a centuries-old tradition. It all began in the early 17th century when a painting was placed in a chapel. This marked the beginning of the Ducasse, which quickly gained popularity. By the 19th century, small folkloric items such as gayoles, wawas, nightingales, and saudarts had made their appearance.

The folkloric Ducasse of Messines as we know it today was born! In 1992, a couple of giants, Batisse and Lalie, accompanied by their son Biloute, added charm to the festivities, and in 2006, Trinette, Biloute's sister, joined the family.

Today, the event is a resounding success and has been recognized as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of the French Community.
