Original and impossible to classify, the work of Marc Chagall (1887-1985) draws on a rich variety of influences rooted both in his cultural heritage and in the experiences that shaped his long artistic career across Russia, France and the United States. In each of these places, the artist showed a deep appreciation for traditional, artisanal and folk practices, finding inspiration in the traditions, craftsmanship and cultures he encountered throughout his life.

About the activity

Beyond painting, Chagall explored printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, stained glass, tapestry and theatre, developing a close creative partnership with the craftspeople who worked alongside him. He delved deeply into the many possibilities that connect the artist with the collective intangible heritage of a culture and a place.

Through more than 200 works and documents, this exhibition reveals how materials, techniques and collaborations nourished his imagination and transformed his creative practice. In dialogue with the collections of the museums of the City of Mons and a selection of contemporary works by BeCraft, it offers a fresh perspective on Chagall’s world and on the transmission of craftsmanship and know-how through time.

In partnership with the Marc and Ida Chagall Archives.

With the support of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Wallonia and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
