With the mural “Roses, Poppies and Freedom”, Giulia Yoshimura creates a work in which nature becomes the language of memory, freedom and hope.
The white rose, a symbol of renewal and peace, stands alongside the poppy, evoking freedom and paying tribute to those who helped liberate the city through their courage and sacrifice.
Brought together in a floral composition, these two flowers tell the story of Mons while conveying a message firmly rooted in the present. The mural celebrates the city’s freedom and natural beauty, while memory, deeply rooted in its history, continues to bloom and be passed down from generation to generation.
Born in Brazil in 1997 and now based in Portugal, Giulia Yoshimura is a visual artist and muralist. She holds a master’s degree in painting from the University of Fine Arts of Porto and, since 2015, has developed an artistic practice largely inspired by flora and the world of botanical art.
In 2018, her desire to give nature a greater place in urban environments led her to explore public spaces. Her monumental murals create a dialogue between nature, architecture and urban life, inviting passers-by to see their surroundings from a new perspective.
“I create my work with the desire to open people’s eyes to nature, inviting them to see and feel it rather than simply walk past it. To awaken in everyone a sense of contemplation, curiosity, admiration and respect for nature.”
Her work has notably been awarded in the urban art category at the MNJC – National Exhibition of Young Creators. Giulia Yoshimura has also taken part in exhibitions in Portugal, Slovakia, Brazil and Costa Rica, where she received an honorary award at the first Glass Art Biennale. Her murals can now be seen in several European countries and in Brazil, including Portugal, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Sweden.
